ElCap Report 10/11/14

By Tom Evans

Yo.. Lots of climbing being done these days, as the weather has been some of the best I can recall, for this time of year.  The power is back on in the Valley and the road is sort of open with different schedules and lane operations.  Better check before you come up on 140.  Today was moon day but a thin layer of clouds dulled the shots but tomorrow is another moon day, the last of the season, and we will see.  Internet has been a problem.  The reports are done and written but I am unable to find internet fast enough to post them… I will post as soon as possible.. sorry!

Yo.. Splendid weather has caused a rush to ElCap, for the first time this season.  Fall weather is here folks so this is just the right moment for you to show up!  Power has been out in Yosemite for several days and rumors abound as to when it will be fixed, down at El Portal.  The only place that has power is the Lodge food areas, because they have generators.  The rooms have no power and haven’t had hot water for a while either.  They are discounting rooms at the Lodge..one third off the cost of a room…not bad if you like the dark!  Lots of interesting action on the Captain these days.

Yo… Nicer day today with only the slightest trace of smoke.  Also, the weather has cooled to more Fall-like conditions.  Highway 140 is closed until further notice doe to the air tanker crash a few days ago.  Sadly the pilot was killed and our thoughts are with his family.  Some nice routes are on the agenda at the moment.

Yo…Today was too warm and smoky to get many shots worth seeing.  Several teams have bailed, because of the heat, over the past several days.  I have no news about the fire out west of the Valley but the air is clear at night and in the mornings and worsens as the day progresses.  The teams who are going upward seem to be making good progress.  James Lucas says it's July in October!

Yo.. Great weather continues here in Yosemite but a little too “good,” as climbers are complaining about the heat…welcome to global warming!  While the Nose has a couple of parties on it the other routes, on the Report, have just one party at the moment.

Fire in above El Portal today and smoke is drifting into the Valley.  It looks like another bad one, rapidly climbing the hills above Arch Rock.  Air fire fighting tanker crashed working this fire... so sad to hear....

Yo.. The good weather, continuing for the next 10 days, is starting to draw climbers to the great cliff.  We have action on several routes now and the big trades are less populated… so… come on out and take advantage of the best conditions in years.

Yo… Wow.. Another fantastic day of climbing conditions on ElCap! Where are the climbers?  Not much to report on with few climbers taking advantage of the great weather.  A few teams on the Nose, and one on Zodiac.

Today’s ElCap Report…written just for you..unique in all the world!

Zodiac:  The hammock boys are killing it today and should be off by dark… seems like those hammocks are a good incentive to climb fast!

1)  Cleaning the MOZ pitch this morning.

Yo… Nice weather for the past several days and it looks to be continuing into next week.  Sweet!  While yesterday was a tough day for the climbing community (still no word on Simon’s condition) it was also a day that saw a lot of climbing, as was today.

Yo.. Well, today was to have been a nice climbing day, with a special event that I will have to cover later.  I was in the Café doing some images and finishing breakfast when Bud Miller, from YOSAR, told me that there was to be rescue off the Nose at Camp 4 ledge.  I quickly packed up my computer and headed to the ElCap Meadow to shoot the proceedings.  No rescue vehicles had arrived yet, so I set up and looked through the camera to see what the problem was.  What I saw was not good…not good at all.  A team that I had been following for a couple of days had had an accident.  Simon, a doctor from Wales, had fallen on the pitch above Camp 4 and was lying, seriously injured, on a ledge. His wife, Marian, was tending to his injuries and on the cell phone to the rescue people.

Yo… It doesn’t get any better than today was here in Yosemite!  We need replacements up on the Cap as most of the teams on the wall have, or are about to, top out.  Nice surprise at the end of the regular shots below, so be sure to take a look!  Trade routes still dominate the climbing with the exception of just one team.
