ElCap Report 10/21/14

By Tom Evans

Yo.. Yo…Yo..  What beautiful days we’ve been having for the last several weeks!  Interesting times to be here in Yosemite.  The Girls are back in town!!   Tomorrow will see Chantel make a run at a sub 24 hour solo of the Nose.  Not to be out done,  Libby and Mayan are doing a practice run on the Nose with the ultimate goal of knocking some serious time off their own Nose record, which I recall being something like 5:36.  Chantel is starting at 4 or so and Libby and Mayan at a more relaxed 7am.  It will be fun to watch, so if you are around then be sure to come on out and support the women!

Yo… The action, on ElCap, has subdued somewhat, in spite of the perfect weather.  Teams reached the top of the Shield, ZM, Salathe, and the Nose.  I’m calling up the reserves!!  All aspiring ElCap climbers report to the Bridge, IMMEDIATELY!!  Be sure to get instructions on the Dress For The Day!  Anyone in Gray, Brown, Black, and dark earth tones, need not bother!  Several Big Guns have arrived in the past few days so get ready for some interesting climbing…only, of course, on the ElCap Report!!  Capt. Tom is your man, here on the front lines, at the vortex, of the epicenter, of the universe!  So don’t stray too far from your computer or you will miss all the breaking news!

Yo…  Several teams have recently topped out, but there is still some interesting climbing going on, in perfect weather.  Fall is starting to take shape here, with warming sunlight on cool days.  The Bridge is as cold as a meat locker, as it’s in the shade for most of the day, and I quickly retire to the meadow upon arrival.  Also, various trees and meadows are finally turning Fall colors.  So get here if you can, and enjoy the climbing and friendship of your fellow climbers.

Yo… Every day, in the introduction, I keep saying the same thing.  But we have perfect weather and the cliff has many interesting climbs being done.  The results are in on the women’s attempt to climb two ElCap routes in a day…. YEP THEY DID IT!!  The time was a little north of 21 hours!  A proud send on the distaff side!  Be sure to look at the last two shots, showing the girls at the Bridge today.

Yo…Great weather continues and climbs are being done to take advantage of it.  Lots of action, all over the cliff today.  The girls were out today and I think are, right now, finishing up the first woman’s team climb of two ElCap Routes in a day!  See the shots below!

Yo…More interesting climbing going on now, in mid season October.  A new route is being worked on and some speed work is going on, in the near future too.  Nice weather is continuing to pack the big trades with heroes and zeros alike.  So read up pukes… these days will be the good old days for all these climbers, and you can see it all too.

Yo…Cooler weather and cloudy skies were the order of the day, save for a stretch of sunny hours around noon.  The action continues on the hill, with a lot of climbers on the Salathe.  The Nose is presently empty of climbers as a couple of teams went to Sickle and then down fixed lines.

Yo… The bad weather predicted earlier has yet to materialize and it looks like we will continue to have nice weather.  Still lots of interesting routes being done on ElCap and the season is looking like it will continue for several more weeks.  This has been a strange Fall with regards to the trees and such.  The Sugar Maple I like to photograph came in and went out in three days.  We are getting some color along the south side drive but the aspens have not turned, although I hear they have on the east side.  No water over the falls, except for Vernal and Nevada.

Yo.. Spectacular weather and lots of interesting climbing are the norm these days here in Yosemite.  The fall lighting is great and I am getting tons of excellent shots of routes that are seldom climbed.  Only the internet is keeping me from posting the reports on time… not much I can do but wait to find a moment when I can put the shots in with the writing … so be patient and the pics will be included.

Yo…Tons of shots on the report today, as we finally have some interesting routes being done, aside from the usual trade routes.  Not that there’s anything wrong with climbing trade routes!  Today was the, second, and last Moon Day for the Fall climbing season.  Look below to see the shot.

I am running a day behind on the report…not because I don’t do them every day, but the internet has been out a lot lately and I have not been able to post them.  Hope this one gets on line pretty soon!
