ElCap Report 10/04/10

Yo… Wild and crazy weather here in Yosemite Valley.  Last night I was awakened by crackling lightning and booming thunder.  Normally thunder storms roll through pretty fast, but this one was unique in my memory.  It never let up all night and is still going on!  It is the most wonderful, awesome storm I have ever experienced.  Constant flashes of lightning and booming thunder rolling all around the valley… it sounded like an artillery barrage.  The blasts were so powerful that the concussions caused bursts of torrential rain to fall right after them.  It poured all night.  This morning I got up and ran for the van.  I went down to ElCap to see what was happening.  The rock was dark gray with streams of water pouring down its exposed faces.

Yo… Well it keeps raining and raining and raining.  So I guess we have a real break in the weather for a few days.  I went down to the Captain this morning to see what was to be seen.  The Report follows and since it pretty thin I have included some scenic shots I took today.

Yo.. Wow what a sweet day it was… right up until the sky opened up, at about 3pm.  Then it poured and is still raining on and off.  The teams on the SW Face are in the shit now, while the SE Face teams are high and dry.  Well, maybe not all of them… Skiy and Andy are in a water course on PSD and Spanish were topping out on Zodiac when the storm hit.  The Cuttler Brothers are near the top on the Nose and might be smart to hide in the Alcove until the worst has past.  The Forecast is for more of the same for several days… we do need the rain but it can play havoc on climbers on the Cap.

Yo…. Well the weather is a bit unsettled with the forecast calling for 20% showers for the next week.  Of course, that is not deterring the teams already on the wall, as they have no choice!  However, some other teams are wringing their hands and calling Momma on the phone for advice and reassurance.  Balderdash I say!!  Get your shiny new rain gear packed in the haul bag and get moving, you mamby pamby pukes!  That said, we did have a brief, light shower today just after 2pm.  Climbers on the wall hardly noticed and no one ledged up.  They are just what I call, “inconvenience showers.”   Hell, the guys on the Nose kept on climbing.  So, I don’t want to hear any postponement talk, in the Café, tomorrow morning.

Yo… Cooler and cloudy for most of the day. We did have a brief shower around 2pm, but it barely wet the street. More on the way I think… we need it … the climbers on the Captain could most likely do without. The lower regions of the routes are getting some action as the weather has returned to more seasonable temperatures. That said, there is still not that much going on at the moment, and for some reason we are seeing a lot of teams with more than two climbers. Anyway….

Yo…. Hot day again but not quite as hot as yesterday. Still many climbers have chosen to lay out for just a bit longer. So the report is again going to be a little on the thin side. Rain is forecast for this weekend, which would be a welcome relief for this dusty old valley. The Nose still commands the scene from the Bridge. I have a dinner engagement at the Korean site in Camp 4 tonight so I have to get this thing on the net. So….

Yo… Warm and warmer was the story of the climbing on ElCap today. A couple of teams came down due to lack of water. Some are bailing and some are postponing a couple of days. A couple of climbers parked in “my spot” at the Bridge today so I was unable to have the ask a climber program. That meant that I could still shoot but move around to other places. As a result I got over 40 shots to pick from that are in the “best of the day” folder. Actually, there were not many routes being climbed today but the Nose was pretty packed and I got some sweet stuff off it.

Yo… another warm day at the Bridge and even more so on the cliff. The action is continuing but not in abundance. The heat has brought a lot of good climbers down and postponed attempts by many others. Only the real hard asses remain… with the exception of those who started so long ago that the heat was a surprise.

Yo… Well the heat is on but not as bad as predicted… however it did look like a training exercise for the 101st Airborne as people were bailing all over the rock. A team of two bailed from ElCap Tower just after a team of three bailed from Dolt. The Koreans bailed from the Trip, when two of the team became too sick to continue, and a solo bailed from PSD. Three guys bailed from New Dawn. It is probably more than the heat but that does have a lot to do with it I think. So the report will be a bit thin today.

Yo… Kinda warm here today… and no breeze to speak of. Steve Schneider was over on the west side fixing on Squeeze Play and said they could only do one pitch as the heat was too intense to continue. Hotter tomorrow and Monday they say. The big stone is getting some traffic but some climbers are postponing for a couple of days in light of the weather. So if you are coming up to climb you might want to give it a few days yet. My favorite tree, I know you really want to hear about this, has just a few leaves starting to get a little color but it looks like the turning is going to be a couple of weeks away.

Yo…. Nice day here in the Ditch. Warming up a bit in full sunlight. I need to get out of here to do some other things so here it is.

Yo… the big, cold wind left in the night and today  was warm and comfortable. It's supposed to warm up this weekend but that didn’t seem to stop the teams from starting out on some good routes. The Face Lift crew was all over the place today and many of our big wall heroes lent a helping hand… something about getting a ticket for the raffle?! Anyway, the action on the SE Face of the Cap dominated the scene today.

Yo… clear weather here today but a hard, cold wind was blowing in from the west all day and the climbers on the Cap were feeling it. At the Bridge it was difficult to shoot in such windy conditions. Lots of action on the Captain with new replacements coming in to fill the gap left by topping out teams. I assume that if you are planning on attending the Face Lift this week then you are most likely here by now …. So come on down to the Bridge to hang with the greats!

Yo… man was it another killer day here or what?! Sweet!! Suddenly there has been a rush of climbers to the cliff and interesting stuff is being climbed again. Just a little on the cool side up on the big stone… a good thing… and the weather is going to get a little warmer by Friday. Everyone is psyched!

Yo… certainly the best day of the season to date. It was the best of both seasons. Warm but not hot…cool but not cold ....the air was clear as a cool fall day…the light on ElCap was really nice too. The Cap is starting to get some teams on it and the shooting is getting better every day. I used a different lens today, a 500mm that gives some wider angle shots, when compared to the 800mm big gun I have used for the past couple of years. So the shots show much more of the pitches and I am able to crop them down to use in the Report as close ups… so far so good!

Yo… cooler today with a strong west wind in the afternoon, as a cold front moved in. The predicted 20% chance of rain produced no moisture but had the lads on the Nose bundled up in puffies. The Nose is the only route with more than one party on it …so… not a lot to report on today as there were no extraordinary events.

Yo… the great weather continues as the Captain stays mostly empty. We have some climbing about to happen but at the moment the reporting is pretty thin. However there was a big rescue off the Nose today and I will include it at the end of the normal report. Needless to say…. YOSAR did it again and another climber owes his life to the dedicated members of the team. It is getting late and I did a zillion shots today so I will get right to the report.

Yo... with the exception of some haze from fires to the south, it was a nice here in the Valley today.  There is still a lack of climbers on the Captain but I think the situation is about to change.  The weather looks good with only a slight chance of rain on Sunday.  It is kind of slow around here these days so come on out so I will have something to write about and not have to make up stuff, like Pete having 20 porters taking his gear to the rock!  Maybe you should review the disclaimer on the Home page if you are believing everything you read here!

Yo…cooler today, mid 70’s, here in Yosemite Valley. As of yet, that has not brought out the masses to climb the Big Stone. I am getting pretty sick of only having a few parties to photograph on the Cap. And you are getting sick of seeing the same locations too. So …. once again it is time for you boys and girls to man-up and get your butts on the rock!

Most of the usual suspects have now arrived in the Valley but seem to have gone craggin instead of wallin…. Totally unacceptable Pukes!! Totally unacceptable… hell you can do that stuff at home. So pack up your haul bags, drag your sorry butts up to the base, and get on the wall… or you will have to answer in person to me… and  you don’t want to go there!!

Today’s ElCap Report… written just for you… unique in all the world!

Yo… really a fine day here in the Valley. The Big Trades are the story today. The rock is pretty empty for this time of year and weather conditions.

Cubicle Pukes… it’s time for you to get out of your chairs, and head for the Valley…remember the Face Lift next week and after that why don’t you stay a few days and climb something on the Captain? This is your chance to get a few days of fame on the ECR. I can see it now… you’ve just come down after a great ElCap climb and I am handing you a cold Cobra, while all the Bridge Rats are congratulating you! You get a whole day to bask in the glory, tell and retell your epic tale of ElCap conquest! For this one day, YOU are the hero of the Bridge, the object of envy and worship! Hey, it doesn’t get any better than that!!
