ElCap Report 5/17/10

 ElCap Report 5/17/10

By Tom Evans

Yo… Well, the rains came this morning early, but have not been much more than intermittent showers thus far. The Cap is socked in and everyone is ledged up, waiting it out. Most of my posse blew out of here this morning opting to do some cranking at Jail House Rock, in Sonora, which is only a couple hours away. Prophetic name that, as some of my posse have climbed high upon the NPS’s “Pyramid of the Undesirables”, commonly referred to as people to be avoided at all cost. A senior member of the posse, a certified “ladies man”, showed up this year in a pimped out van and to save gas has converted it to run on used condoms and discarded panties!!!  One of the others has climbed to the number two spot, high on the pyramid, a spot I once occupied before I became a legitimate asset here. I had it tough though as Chongo had the top spot for years and was in a class by himself.

Anyway … Kate and EE are ledged up on ECT as are the Mammoth lads, Josh and Brett. I don’t know if the two guys who were trying to bail yesterday actually made it down or are still there on ECT. I didn’t see them when I checked out the face this afternoon.

The Trip:  Richie and Josie are making a run for the top and were spotted at the start of the slab pitch at the end. It appears that they have abandoned their kit and fixed to the top. Bryn and Chris are ledged up at the end of the last bolt ladder just left of a big water streak.

Out west I saw a party in the Alcove of the Salathe, and I hear they are Golden Gater’s I saw climbing yesterday.  Graham and partner bailed from LA late yesterday.

Saw the guys on the Shield on Chiefton ledge early in the afternoon.... they looked to be fine.

The rest of the mountain looks empty.

I went around doing some nature and scenic shooting this afternoon which was a nice change of pace. I am posting some shots up for your pleasure.

As I made my rounds I ran into Geologist Greg Stock, who with an assistant went into the woods with shovels and a big aluminum box. I hear he knows where all the bodies are buried and was out moving some to better locations!

The rest are shots I took around here today.

So that's the way it is for this the 17th day of May 2010.  Bye Tom

You will be missed

You will be missed Ottawa!

Had fun passing over the top of you while doing LIA last season.

The 2010 season is off and running!

I'm not going to make it down this year, so it's that much more important that the reports have started.
I know I missed the first couple of reports, out of town, but now I'm focussed and ready to beat Skully to the evening's report.
Great to have you back in the valley Tom.

Cheers,

Ottawa Doug
