ElCap Report 9/29/10

ElCap Report 9/29/10

By Tom Evans

Yo…. Hot day again but not quite as hot as yesterday. Still many climbers have chosen to lay out for just a bit longer. So the report is again going to be a little on the thin side. Rain is forecast for this weekend, which would be a welcome relief for this dusty old valley. The Nose still commands the scene from the Bridge. I have a dinner engagement at the Korean site in Camp 4 tonight so I have to get this thing on the net. So….

Yo… Warm and warmer was the story of the climbing on ElCap today. A couple of teams came down due to lack of water. Some are bailing and some are postponing a couple of days. A couple of climbers parked in “my spot” at the Bridge today so I was unable to have the ask a climber program. That meant that I could still shoot but move around to other places. As a result I got over 40 shots to pick from that are in the “best of the day” folder. Actually, there were not many routes being climbed today but the Nose was pretty packed and I got some sweet stuff off it.

Yo… another warm day at the Bridge and even more so on the cliff. The action is continuing but not in abundance. The heat has brought a lot of good climbers down and postponed attempts by many others. Only the real hard asses remain… with the exception of those who started so long ago that the heat was a surprise.

Yo… Well the heat is on but not as bad as predicted… however it did look like a training exercise for the 101st Airborne as people were bailing all over the rock. A team of two bailed from ElCap Tower just after a team of three bailed from Dolt. The Koreans bailed from the Trip, when two of the team became too sick to continue, and a solo bailed from PSD. Three guys bailed from New Dawn. It is probably more than the heat but that does have a lot to do with it I think. So the report will be a bit thin today.

Yo… Kinda warm here today… and no breeze to speak of. Steve Schneider was over on the west side fixing on Squeeze Play and said they could only do one pitch as the heat was too intense to continue. Hotter tomorrow and Monday they say. The big stone is getting some traffic but some climbers are postponing for a couple of days in light of the weather. So if you are coming up to climb you might want to give it a few days yet. My favorite tree, I know you really want to hear about this, has just a few leaves starting to get a little color but it looks like the turning is going to be a couple of weeks away.

Yo…. Nice day here in the Ditch. Warming up a bit in full sunlight. I need to get out of here to do some other things so here it is.

Yo… the big, cold wind left in the night and today  was warm and comfortable. It's supposed to warm up this weekend but that didn’t seem to stop the teams from starting out on some good routes. The Face Lift crew was all over the place today and many of our big wall heroes lent a helping hand… something about getting a ticket for the raffle?! Anyway, the action on the SE Face of the Cap dominated the scene today.

Yo… clear weather here today but a hard, cold wind was blowing in from the west all day and the climbers on the Cap were feeling it. At the Bridge it was difficult to shoot in such windy conditions. Lots of action on the Captain with new replacements coming in to fill the gap left by topping out teams. I assume that if you are planning on attending the Face Lift this week then you are most likely here by now …. So come on down to the Bridge to hang with the greats!

Yo… man was it another killer day here or what?! Sweet!! Suddenly there has been a rush of climbers to the cliff and interesting stuff is being climbed again. Just a little on the cool side up on the big stone… a good thing… and the weather is going to get a little warmer by Friday. Everyone is psyched!

Yo… certainly the best day of the season to date. It was the best of both seasons. Warm but not hot…cool but not cold ....the air was clear as a cool fall day…the light on ElCap was really nice too. The Cap is starting to get some teams on it and the shooting is getting better every day. I used a different lens today, a 500mm that gives some wider angle shots, when compared to the 800mm big gun I have used for the past couple of years. So the shots show much more of the pitches and I am able to crop them down to use in the Report as close ups… so far so good!

Today’s ElCap Report… written just for you… unique in all the world!
